‘Safe Journey’ - International Day of Action Against Whaling

The rally was staged by Auckland’s Pacific community to protest against Japanese plans to hunt up to 50 humpback whales next summer.

Whales hold a significant place in the tradition and culture of many Pacific countries, and whale-watching also plays an important part in the economies of Australia, New Zealand, and many struggling South Pacific countries.

Part of an international day of protest, the rally at Auckland’s Manukau Square, featured Maori and Pacific community leaders and entertainers.

‘Day of Action’ events were held in Manukau City (Auckland), Tauranga and Kaikoura, and also in Tonga and in twenty towns in Australia.

Sponsorship money raised was offered to the “Echoes in the Blue” donation campaign for payment to its selected charities in recognition of their continued efforts to see an end to whaling soon.
